Gwen Gunter
What If?

Alan Avery Art Company is pleased to present Gwen Gunter: "What If?". This solo exhibition showcases new paintings on canvas and paper as well as 3-dimensional work.

Gwen Gunter's work encompasses both fine and commercial art, having worked as a graphic artist, illustrator, and photographer. Currently based in Grayson, Georgia, Gunter spends her time creating organic abstract paintings featuring irregular shapes animated by line and bright color. These shapes can be seen as player in the stream of everyday experience. They overlap, connect, and butt up against one another as they play out a scenario on the canvas. Their interaction is open to interpretation and only after the work is complete is she given the title.

Gunter's process begins with dozens of rapid intuitive drawings that are accumulated over a period of time. These drawings are executed quickly and left to ripen. Weeks later, she will return to the pages and see which composition grabs her attention. As color and line are added, changes are made seeking balance and cohesion. When the shapes, as characters, have made their statement and fallen into harmony, she knows the painting is done.

Gunter says this exhibition, What If? is informed by an expanded experience of possibility. The creative process is full of innovation ideas that often remain hidden until the barriers that prevent them from coming to life are removed. By adopting the mindset of What If?, we can open ourselves up to a world of possibilities that lie beyond what we already know. This mindset encourages us to take risks and create something new and unexpected. The shapes that are centalto her practice emerged when she began to explore the concept of simplicity in form. These forms sometimes stand alone, and at other times are grouped together in configurations that reflect the many faces of possibility itself. The vibrant colors that are used in the exhibition reflect the excitement of following a new and unanticipated direction, which has become both meditative and intentional in the exploration.

Gwen Gunter earned a B.A. from Columbia college with further study at Atlanta College of Art and Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta.
