Russell Whiting
A self-taught sculptor, Russell Whiting is known for pioneering the art of carving metal with a torch. He developed this method from his experience working in shipyards and oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and has been sculpting for over twenty years. He lives in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
His figurative sculpture is primarily metal, although he often uses wood as well. Whiting works with both large and small scale figures, balancing the elements of control and chaos that are inherent in working with molten steel. His figures may be slick and smooth or rough and show signs of drips, or gouged metal.
Whiting's work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and can be found in corporate and private collections around the world including public sculptures at Baylor School, Chattanooga, TN; King Plow Art Center, Atlanta, GA; Gulf Coast Art Museum, St. Petersburg, FL; Arkitex II, Tampa, FL; and The Nest, Outdoor Sculpture Garden, Alexandria, LA.
